From 2023 to 2025, Babs Gons was Poet Laureate of the Netherlands. During her tenure, she dedicated herself to making poetry accessible to the widest possible audience. She brought poetry to surprising places and encouraged the art of recitation. The selection committee described her as a poet ‘with a voice full of fire, burning and warm, who knows better than anyone how to put into words what is alive in society’.

In addition to her work as a poet, Babs Gons is a sought-after presenter and program maker. Since 2017, she has been the driving force behind Babs' Woordsalon, a literary-musical revue where poets, writers, thinkers, cabaret artists, and musicians meet. The Woordsalon has been a guest at festivals such as Oerol and Lowlands, occupied a large venue at De Melkweg, and takes place annually at the Kleine Komedie with a special Keti Koti edition.

In addition, Babs Gons writes essays, stories, and columns. A selection of her columns for Het Parool appeared under the title “Alles wat je liefhebt wordt mooi” (Everything you love becomes beautiful). She wrote columns for the poetry magazine Awater and remains a columnist for Flow Magazine to this day. As a Writer-in-Residence at the Vrije Universiteit, she published the essay “Ik draag mijn tong in mijn borst” (I carry my tongue in my chest). In the autumn of 2026, she will be a guest writer at the University of Groningen. She has been a member of the Academy of Arts since 2022.
